After searching, most go the AutoToy or Blitzsafe expensive cable route, but has anyone figured out a direct connection from the trunk cd-changer cable to the iPod that allows the head unit to sense that there is something connected to the changer input e.g. a resistor?
I have the stereo connections figured out, but the h/u won't activate the changer input- presumably because there is no/not enough load on the line in.
Guess I'm really asking if anyone has made their own cable.

the other way you can do it the way jeff bipes does it, but it requires that you have a cd changer. basically u keep the cd changer connected but you just tap into the left and right audio, but keep the power lines intact going to and from the changer.
