Just bought a 2000 A4

I just bought a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro Tiptronic (Q Tip?) This is my first post here. I have some questions about the engine sludge problems some people are having. I have maintenance records for oil changes performed by the Audi dealer every 10,000 miles but when I take the oil cap off it looks pretty black in there. I saw a Passat with the same mileage (95,000) that looked a lot less black under the cap so I assume mine has been driven hard or the Passat was driven really easy.
I was already going to do a motor flush with something like "Gunk 5-minute Motor Flush". Then I looked on the forums and saw all the oil pump screens clogged and failed oil pumps. How likely is it that I would be affected by the sludge problem? How well does the motor flush work? Is there a recommended brand of motor flush to use? Has anyone done a motor flush and then opened their engine to find their oil pump screen still clogged? Is there a howto on changing your oil pump and screen? Also I see people talking about a larger oil filter on the newer engines. Will these fit on my 2000 1.8T?
Thanks,
Nick
