There is an oily substance dripping from the transmission area just about at the back of where the plastic panel ends that you remove when you change the engine oil. The car is a 99 2.8 quattro with 41,000 miles. Anyone have any ideas what might be leaking? It almost looks like engine oil but is near the transmission.

The upper oil pan gasket on the 2.8l love to leak near the back where they join the trans. May look like a rear main seal but probably isn't. This is a nasty job to do. Look along the join of the upper oil pan and see if it is wet. You have to drop the subframe and alot of other stuff. I is about a 5 or 6 hour job on a hoist. The oil cooler lines drip further forward and on the shield. You could also have a valve cover gasket leak. The run down next to the bell housing on the transmision. Sometimes the leak is coming from under the variable valve timing solenoid on the rear of the passengers side head. Get a small mirrorand light and look down the back of the heads.
