lol....well,I was told all I needed to do was cover the air intake and spray away, after washing the engine bay with some simple green,I proceeded to rinse with water, then used an air-hose to dry everything up,To my surprise the car started without a glitch, headed out for some lunch, upon my return,I started the car only to see the Check engine light flashing, car was misfiring, luckily my buddy's repair shop wasn't too far away, without hesitation he told me to pull out the plugs, sounds like you got water in there !!!changed plugs, blew dried the coils and reset cel...end of my afternoon.....!!

The port in the head/valve cover is watertight, the coil packs are not. It doesn't take a lot of water to cause problems here.
This is one place Audi excels. Most other OHC engines leak oil terrribly and the spark plug boots live in oil. All of mine have always been bone dry.

I removed the engine cover, cover over the fuel rail, air box cover, air inlet and the 'hose' connceting the air inlet to the airbox before cleaning my '97 1.8 last weekend.
I stuffed a couple of rags in the air box inlet and laid a towel over the coils and proceded to scrub away with Simple Green and rinsed with a trickle of water. I did try my best to keep the water away from the air box inlet and coilpacks, but when I was done the towel over the coil packs was soaked.
Wasn't there a few guys who removed their engine covers all together? I wonder if they ever had any problems.
