Just got a Passport 8500 . . .
Put it in before a 1000-mile trip. Nice little machine, 'specially in "Expert" mode. I've already noticed the temptation to drive just a tad bit faster.
I definitely want to hardwire it, though--that stock coiled cord gets in the way. Does anyone know the pinout for the hardwire cable? It looks like a standard RJ-11 jack, but what pins do what? (The power bits are probably pretty easy to find [though if anyone has the information on tap, it'd give me corroboration when I put the cable in], but does anyone know if you need the other pins for anything? Will the detector run without them?)
Are there any restrictions on what type of wire I can use for this? Could I just lop the end off a phone cable and stick the appropriate pins in the appropriate places in my fuse box? Or do I need some type of special cabling? ('Scuse the silly questions, please--I've had a bit of experience with electronics, but I'm really new to cars!)
Thanks!

just pay $10 for the hardwire kit, its worth it
from www.escortradar.com
the install is super easy, it comes with a spade already to use like in the V1 hardwire tech article and a loop type connector for the ground - overall an easy install
and get the remote display too ;-) its fun
check my picture poster, i think i've got a pic or two of my install
and see the V1 hardwire tech article in the AW tech section

Probably true--but why buy a cable when I've got fifty-odd spare phone cords hanging around my desk?
<blink> Dammit, I'm not a student any more. I've gotta get out of this "do it as cheaply as possible" mindset.
Bloody hard habit to break, let me tell you.

Ooo . . . I'm all about inline fuses.
I was wondering exactly how to accomplish that. I will send an order off to Escort posthaste. Thanks for the info!
Nice pics, BTW. Do you always have the Passport mounted below your mirror? I had thought that optimal placement was supposed to be up as high as possible?

Nice
I got mine about a month ago. FYI, I mounted it to the right (passenger side) of the rear-view mirror.
Before you get too ambitious about speeding though, consider this. I'd say I no warning for about 80% of the cops I encounter---they aren't using radar. But I'm sure they'll still stop you if you're going outrageously fast.
