Pretty cool, decodes VW and Audi VINs...just fill out the VIN box, and it tells you year, engine, and such.

The only problem is I didn't keep it up to date.<ul><li><a href="http://members.aol.com/drewinva/audi/vin/index.html">Drew's Audi VIN Decoder</a></li></ul>

So perhaps there were only 5215 model year 1999 A4's prior to yours.
These numbers do not need to start at zero, however. I have another decoder for Oldsmobiles and I know that in the 60's and 70's, a range was devoted to a model of car, so the Cutlasses miht have been in the 100,000's, and the Delta 88's were in the 200,000's, etc.
The number is just a number that is unique to your car. There is no significance to it beyond that.
