That Hyundai Tiburon coupe is the Hyundai that, I believe, was designed by Pininfarina. The press
thus far have been universal in their feeling that Pininfarina copied their own design of the Ferrari 456GT when designing this. Personally, I think the Lexus Coupe looks like a hack job, bastardized combination of the Audi TT and the old Tiburon, so maybe the family resemblance pulls through.

One more thing, that Hyundai was through sheet metal design long before the Lexus ever appeared.
The lag time in car design these days, although much shorter than it was in the past, is still considerable. The Lexus has been out about 1 year, maybe less, which certainly is not enough time for Hyundai to throw that design together. I am certain that the Hyundai was already well into prototype testing whe the designers first saw the Lexus.

I don't have anything against car X looking like car Y. If you have a box, there's only so many ways
to dress it up. Like the Gen II A4 looking like a baby A6, I've no problem with that. If it looks good, why not?
The rear of a car is the first thing you see when you drive (unless you drive fast, but there's always someone faster than you). So, given the compromise bet. cargo volume and asthetics, there's only so many ways to make a car's decklid different and unique but pleasing at the same time. After that, all cars are variations of each other.

There's a difference betwen design elements and design. I will bet most designers would not agree
with your theory that there are only a limited number of ways to design a rear end. In the last 50 years there have been literally thousands of designs. New car designs are heralded yearly because they do somethuing never seen before. New materials and technology are also changing design at all times, and often design serves to show off new materials and technology. The main reason for cars looking the saem is economics. It is cheaper to copy a design and while you're at it, you might as well copy a design people like and win some customers. This is perhaps the only reason why cars look alike.
