I posted yesterday that a friend of mine is considering buying a 99 Avant 1.8TQM from a friend of his. So as part of my research I wanted to see what other similar cars are selling for.
I priced out the car on Edmunds and KBB and came up with a value in the ballpark of $7k. (I also valued my 1998 car around $6500. I guess I'm keeping it for a long time.) If it were a dealer sale, then the value would be around $8k.
But looking at the AW classifieds, I saw a '99 A4 advertised for $12,500, and a '97 A4 advertised for $9000. I can understand that Audi enthusiasts generally take better care of their cars than most people and want to get the most money for them. But these figures are not even in the same ballpark.
Are Edmunds & KBB unrealistically low? Or are the people selling on AW reaching for the stars?
Thanks!

It's all what the buyer is willing to pay. Some people list their cars high because they don't really want to sell them, but if the right money comes around, they'll take it. Of course, there are those people who don't do their research too.

...popped in a used cam adjuster, did a complete timing belt service, cleaned the pieces of cam adjuster guide out of the oil pump pickup (no this is NOT the caulkmiester I posted about) and I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of sludge in the pan (should have taken photos). I had the ABS control unit fixed at Module Master and replaced a bad wheel sensor. Brake pads look like new and I have a bunch of service records from the PO. Car is dark gray.
My in-law's car seat doesn't fit well in the back seat, so I need to either fix the slushbox on their 1997 A6 avant or find them a C5 avant.

I figure if I sold mine.. I would have to spend just as much to get a new used, reliable auto that I don't mind paying monthly payments and insurance on. She's fun, fast, reliable.. well worth keeping.
