Default just to make sure. when removing steering wheel i need to disconect the battery, then . . .

remove the two torx on the back, then remove the triple square (not all the way) and take the wheel off. Also if the battery is disconnected I can't get killed by the air bag right?

I'm a little confused about this canceling ring or clock spring. It sounds like a critical part, and I don't want to screw it up. What's the trick (some tape) to make sure I do it right.

I'm only planning on removing the steering wheel to install my new driving light switches, so maybe I won't even need to remove this canceling ring.

Default unhookingthe battery will be a precautionary step so you don't punch yourself in the face

with the airbag, yes

as for the other stuff, cant help you. I believe it will all just come off w/ a few screws, but I never messed with it after pulling my steering wheel. I did it to help with the removal of the dash for a evap core R&R, so nothing on the steering column needed to be messed with.

Default I never disconnect the battery.

If you read Bentley, they say to disconnect the battery before you change a tire. Overkill in most cases. If the key is off and you give the capacitors some time to discharge, there's really no reason to disconnect the battery.

Default Even with the battery disconnected, the air bag can still be deployed....

ESD on the connector can set it off if the shorting clip is faulty

LOL. Pretty much. There's absolutely no reason to disconnect the battery to do an air bag.

Default Well, it does allow the caps to drain from the ignitor doesn't it?

Most important thing is to ground yourself to the car before handling the bag. Static discharge is more dangerous than yanking the wire off the back. I've heard of bags going off while mounted due to static..

Caps drain when you shut off the key.
