Default K04 chip question...

I found someone that has a 99.5 Tip Avant that currently has the GIAC K04 chip in it. The guy purchased a PC-16 chip new and is interested in selling his standard K04 chip. Does anyone know for sure if I get this K04 chip from him, will I be able to install it in my socketed ECU? I purchased the socketed chip so I could go back to stock if I wanted.

Thanks.

Never mind, I took a look at my stock chip. It obviously will not work.

Default If you have a socketed GIAC chip it will work. Your stock chip looks different than the GIAC ...

K03 & K04 chip. If you compare your GIAC K03 chip to his GIAC K04 chip, they will be the same.

Default .8 bar - it is called a 1.8 bar because on those they calculate the bar...

as 1 atmosphere (1 bar) + the .8 bar of boost.

So basically it is 12 psi, not the 27 psi you were thinking.

Either way, it still runs pretty strong. I did run it at about 15 ps1 for a while & it was pretty fast for a big old car.

Default if you have a giac chipped ecu it should work.

i bought a GIAC k03 chip+ecu used before i bought my k04 kit. i never even used the k03 chip i just sent it in for a k04 chip. worked fine in the giac socketed ecu.

(in fact i also did the same thing with my wetteraur chipped k03 ecu, sent in the k03 chip for their k04 chip)

Default Ok, here are some pics of my stock chip that has been "socketed"...

The top looks like:
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/90705/stock_chip_top.jpg">

The bottom looks like:
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/90705/stock_chip_bottom.jpg">

I don't know what an unsocketed chip looks like. I have to assume that it's just the chip that attaches to the adapter board? If I were to buy this unsocketed K04 GIAC chip, I would have to have it soldered onto my board no? I can't remember if the GIAC chip in my ECU is soldered to its board or if it's just pressed in. I guess I'll have to look tomorrow.

What do you think now?

Default Thanks, but do you think I would be able to swap the chips myself.

Without examining the chip closer, it appears to not have been soldered in.
