If you are looking at a factory built K04 and K03 turbo. Is there anyway to tell the difference from the outside? I know they have the same size outside casting, but do they share the same number stamped on the side?

one will say k-03 the other k-04 on the housing should be very small

ok, cool. it is kind of crammed up front so it is hard to see... maybe putting a mirror down there would help. i would assume it is on the front of the housing next to the part number or in that vicinity. thanks!

It should be on a blue metal plate that is stuck to the front of the housing.
