Default K04 turbo rebuild

Is it possible to rebuild the K04-015 turbo? And is it a diy job? Or if I have to take it to a turbo shop how much would that cost? Thanks

Depends on how bad yours is. Any bent fins? Could be an easy DIY if your'e handy with a wrench.

Default Any experience with these guys?

I'd be hesitant to spend $400 on a rebuild if I can get a new one for $800. How would a rebuild be better than a new one? Is there really any truth to that claim? Should someone worry about other parts failing that were not the cause of the original problem?

Default I bought my latest turbo from Tim, great guy to deal with... Mine was new in sealed box...

I know he does turbo rebuilding in general... I personally don't think it's worth it to rebuild a K04, and he shares my feelings.

Gents,

Yes, its possible to rebuild the K04-015. This can be accomplished at a price of $400.00 if the compressor wheel is not damaged or rubbed.

If anyone needs real facts on rebuilding a Borg Warner K03 / K04 turbo charger feel free to call or email. There are several upgrade options we offer to improve the K Series turbos.

Im sure there are skeptics out there who feel rebuilding is a "Hail Mary". On the far left there are many folks who assume a rebuild kit will correct their smoking 1.8t. If you plan on rebuilding a K03 / K04 turbocharger think twice as the cost will accumulate quickly.

To properly rebuild a turbocharger there are several components that must meet OEM specifications. If those components are worn beyond OEM specification the components must be machined to an oversize replacement. If the bearing "seat" is worn we machine the "seat" and replace it with an oversize journal bearing.

Overhauling requires proper equipment and tooling in order to make accurate corrections.

Its common for the components on the K03 / K04 turbocharger(s) to wear beyond service limit. In the case a component cannot be corrected we supply a new replacement component (Turbine, Compressor, Bearing Housing etc.)

In addition to machine shop services we VSR bench test each cartridge with pressurized temperate oil at speeds in excess of 120,000 RPM. Our goal is to insure each cartridge runs less than 1.0G @ 80,000 RPM. In the event we rebuild a twin-turbo Audi S4 RS4 RS6 each turbo is VSR sorted and matched.

We look forward to your questions regarding Borg Warner rebuilds or upgrades.

Thank you,
Sean Kinch
