Default Kendall GT1 20w50 motor oil, anyone running this?

I have a 97 2.8 12v. My mechanic put this in last Friday, says it's good stuff. I don't have reason not to believe him, but I am still a bit skeptical about it being as good as synthetic (Mobil 1).

But 20w50? I thought we are suppose to be running (0-15)w50.

Also, on the mountain drive with the DTM folks yesterday, the oil temp went way up towards 250. I was driving hard, and I have a automatic, so pretty much had my foot to the floor the entire way... but 250 is the highest I have ever seem. A BMW driver suggested that the 20w50 burns hotter to protect the engine... what do you all think?

Default Kendall is "the cheap stuff" that shops buy by the 55gal drum for oil changes

I wouldn't put anything heavier than Mobil1 0W-40 in your car.

Default Surprising that a shop which services Lotus would do that...

Will bring some Mobil 1 back to the shop later on to have them change it out.

Default there is nothing wrong with kendall

And its not the "cheap stuff", its claim to fame was that back in the day all of the oil products made came from a single oil field. No need to change it out until next change

Default Agreed. I sold auto parts in the early 80's and

Kendall had a pretty good reputation. They offered alot of "racing" oils. However, today I would find myself a good synthetic. As for the 20W-50, that was a populer weight for smaller displacement and turbo charged engines. It resisted thermal breakdown better than the light weights. Not necessary with a full synthetic.

Default 20w-50 is an antiquated formula in dino.Use dino15w-40. 20w-50 synthetic is another story, PAO-base.

In your engine at above freezing temps, it's a fine choice. Valvoline SynPower 20w-50 is good too, but I'd use the Syntec 5w-50 for a lot of reasons. One reason is the awesome PTG M3 uses it! Another reason is my BOSCH Mechanic uses it by the drum. Here are some pics of an engine run on Syntec 5w-50 at 10k intervals for 110k, clean. Your engine does not put out the power that requires a really high viscosity oil, but light 30 weights are not good. I'd say use Mobil 1 5w-40 SUV oil, aka Delvac-1. I use German Syntec 0w-30 in my 30v, it's on the 30/40 borderline.

Syntec 5w-50 in an Audi 12v pics

Default What is that statement based on, research? Conoco has the best oils available, synths for $1.50

I'll just let that "not using anything heavier than Mobil 1 0w-40" statment pass. Mobil 1 0w-40 shears to a 30 weight, ironicly. You might want to look at some Used Oil Analysis or just glance at the Syntec link a post or two up. If you are going to give advice, it would be a good idea to know what you are talking about.

Conoco Brands Upgrade to Synthetics for Entry-Level Oils

Default Forget '80s oil lore. Kendall is a great brand, now owned by Conoco.Their GF-4 spec oils are awesome

the new GF-4/SM has brought a major upgrade to the "dino" oils. They are now all hydrocrack G-II, II+ and Gruppe III base. Conoco was the first to market with the Motorcraft line of "synthectics" for $1.50. It has a new and expensive form of soluable moly. All brands are improving, Mobil Drive Clean even has some PAO in it for $2. Yep, they are the real deal.

Default I buy bulk oil rather frequently...Kendall is often the cheapest or almost the cheapest in a given..

weight. Motor oil is one of those items where you often really DO get what you pay for.

And I'll let your comment about my comment about my cousin's brother's comment pass too. Review the latest Audi oil recommendations to prevent sludge. M1 0-40 is on the list. Kendall GT1 20W-50 is not.

Cheers,

Default I hardly think that you get what you pay for in motor oils. What you call Audi's latest info is old

502 is an old spec, VW 503.01 is what I'd "review". The VW 502 list is really a pathetic lot other than the ones that also meet VW 503.01. 502 is nothing more than a rehash or the 1998 A3 spec. Some $2 dinos and semi synths meet A3 including Syntec Blend 10w-40 which was just tweaked to meet SM/GF-4. So, in effect, there is a contradiction between you embracing 502 (A3) and ******* out SM/GF-4 oils when they are one in the same and a fraction of the cost of Mobil 1.

AoA hung their hat on a bunch of obsolete oils probally because the only oils in North America that meet VW 503.01 are M1 0w-40, German Syntec and Motul Excess. Pennzoil Euro might meet it too.

Kendall GF-4 5w-30 is thicker than Mobil 1 5w-30 and without seal issues, nice for $1/q.

Here are some Used Oil Analysis that are relavent.

Virgin Motorcraft Analysis shows "best oil for the money".

Kendall is a totally fine oil in it's older formula.

Kendall 5w-40 does better than Mobil 1 in the same engine.

Kendall Virgin Analysis way better than Mobil dino
