Default Keyless Entry, Option?

My 1998 A4 2.8Q did not come with a remote entry keyfab. I was told before to buy a remote off of ebay. I am ready to buy one from ebay but don't know if my car ever had a remote keyfab. Is every 1998 A4 equiped to handle a remote keyfab. Also, They were showing the FCCID, are there certain keyfabs on ebay that will not work for me, if so how do i check.

Default Im in the same boat.......

I also have a 98 and it didnt come with a remote. I purchased a new key fob at my dealer but they cant get it to work. They told me that the car DOES have the equipment installed (as all A4's after 96 do) but the unit has to be "recoded" by the dealer. Now I have to make an appointment.

Do you have two master keys for the car? If so, skip the appointment. I can tell you how to do it.

There are instructions on recoding the keyfab that come with some of the keyfabs on ebay. Did you do anything to try and recode it? Did you have a problem getting the key cut? How do you sure know that ALL A4s after 96 have the equipment?

Default Haven't tried it myself, but its been confirmed that this works.

1. Take your master key and put it in the ignition and turn it to ON, but don't start the car.

2. Close and lock the driver's door with the second master key, leaving the first in the ignition in the ON position.

3. Take the first remote and press "unlock" ONCE - the alarm will "honk" or the lights will flash depending on the model year. The door will remain locked.

4. With the key, unlock and lock the door again.

5. Test the remote by pressing the "unlock" button again - the lock should open this time.

6. Open the door and turn the igintion off and back ON using the same key.

7. Repeat the steps above until all the remotes are programmed in. Up to 4 can be programmed in to the memory.

Default Should I get one with a Trunk button?

There appear to be 2 kinds of remotes that work with the 98 A4 according to ebay listings. Wich one should I get? The one with the trunk button, or the one without the trunk button?

Default The method you described is for recoding the KEYS....we need the actual

unit inside the car recoded. Two different thing.

Oh, you mean the Central Locking controller? You'll need VAG-COM for that.
