Let me ask a naive question......
OK so my 01.5 1.8T with the stock 15" rims and Nokian WR tires start to emit a low growling noise when I go down the road. It's louder with higher speeds. From my ears and from my friend's ears, it sounds like it's coming from the rear right corner.
Would this be a wheel bearing? Or even worse, center differential? I noticed no decrease in mpg, and the car has about 73,000 miles.
Any ideas guys? Thanks!

could be the tire wear, or more than likely the rear wheel bearings...
I had the left rear go bad 3 times in less than 2 years. You could move the tires around to see if the noise follows the tires or just replace your rear wheel bearing.

Thanks guys! Dealer wants to look at it for $89.....
Called it the "Wheel and Suspension Inspection". I told them they better apply that to the work they will be doing if it's the RR wheel bearing that screwed up. THey said they will. We will see.
Thanks for the verdict!

Surprisingly the charge labor + parts are $360......
Oh well, who knows, maybe they loosened up something else so I can go back.
But yeah, it's really the wheel bearing.

Thats not too bad, but still @$140 more than from a good indy shop
Depends on your comfort level, if you don't have a good independent shop you can trust I can see why you'd want to use the dealer.
Ultimately, it will be in your best interest to find a good German repair shop...you'll save money in the long run. Check your local Audi forum for local shop recommendations.
