the rpms are too low for the gear you are in. No biggy (I hope), I do that every once in a while when I drive my car befored it has warmed up.
I don't know about any damage it may incur.

If you don't think I am right, then prove me wrong. Don't just say I am wrong. I understand how engines work mechanically.
There are a bunch of factors involved and the engine stalling is one of them. The vibration that maggiobomb is describing is coming/its source is from the tranny and is a result of what the engine is doing. It feels like the tranny to me when it happens in my car.

if your clutch is slipping. If the revs jump up in 5th gear, but the car doesn't move any faster, time for a new clutch.
I'm no mechanic, but I would imagine that the vibrations caused by the increased load would cause some additional wear on the clutch. Not going to hurt if you do it a few times. But repeated shifts like this might accelerate clutch wear. But I could be wrong.

because the engine us under high load, but low revs, each ignition cycle has a LOT of work to do to keep the engine turning.. That's why you feel the vibrations, you are feeling each ignition stroke.
This can cause problems with the crank bearings, as well as rods etc..
