Default let's say i'm cruising at 35mph in 3rd, then suddenly shift to 5th...

i'll be at around 1300rpm and there will be a vibration until i reach around 2k...

1. what causes this vibration?

2. what damage, if any, is occuring?

Default It is because the engine is starting to stall..

the rpms are too low for the gear you are in. No biggy (I hope), I do that every once in a while when I drive my car befored it has warmed up.

I don't know about any damage it may incur.

exactly WHY it vibrates like that. i've wondered for years, since my last car. i know NOT to drive like that, just didn't know what causes the vibration like that and if there was damage ocurring.

Default no my dad has been going 1st, 2nd, 5th for years in his little mitsu van

the only problem he has now is ring wear on his pistons. But that usually happens after 275K miles...

Default the engine stalling is part of the reason/result and related the reply by MorganS13

If you don't think I am right, then prove me wrong. Don't just say I am wrong. I understand how engines work mechanically.

There are a bunch of factors involved and the engine stalling is one of them. The vibration that maggiobomb is describing is coming/its source is from the tranny and is a result of what the engine is doing. It feels like the tranny to me when it happens in my car.

too much load + too low revs = not enough revs to balance out the vibrations

Default Don't know the answers to your questions, but it's a good way to learn

if your clutch is slipping. If the revs jump up in 5th gear, but the car doesn't move any faster, time for a new clutch.

I'm no mechanic, but I would imagine that the vibrations caused by the increased load would cause some additional wear on the clutch. Not going to hurt if you do it a few times. But repeated shifts like this might accelerate clutch wear. But I could be wrong.

Default That's what's called lugging the engine. It's generally not good for engines,

because the engine us under high load, but low revs, each ignition cycle has a LOT of work to do to keep the engine turning.. That's why you feel the vibrations, you are feeling each ignition stroke.

This can cause problems with the crank bearings, as well as rods etc..
