Default Little Help: brown crap in coolant resevoir

I have a '97 1.8tq with 95k miles. In my coolant resevoir there is thick brown gunk. It is like a thick chocolate milk shake in there! What in the world is going on?

Default oil

Your oil cooler (just behind the oil filter) is failing and allowing the coolant and oil to mix.

Default Re: oil

It is not running hot, so I assume it is ok to drive it the 15 miles to my shop. Any idea on the cost to fix?

Default Yeah, you can drive it to the shop.

The shop may suggest a bad head gasket, which would probably hold true on most cars. I would insist they replace the oil cooler first, and see how that works out. That's generally what fails and causes this on these cars.

Cost...not really sure. I'd say 1/2 hr to replace the oil cooler, oil and filter change, the cost of the cooler, and probably 2-3 hours to flush (several times) and fill the cooling system. That oil/coolant sludge is tough to clean out of the cooling system.

Default Confucious say: Coolant in oil equals seized engine if driven.

Just DIY the oil cooler and flush, flush, flush.

Default been there, done that.

I changed the head gasket on a golf twice before I found out it was the stinking oil cooler! worth checking out!
