And I might not have stretched my budget to the A4 except for the great (under invoice) deal I got on my A4. The Passat (fully loaded, V6) ended up being more expensive than the A4 that I purchased. In the end, the main differences between the two are:
1) rear seat room
2) warranty (longer on the A4, but 10-yr on the Passat's powertrain)
3) lower aspect tires on the A4 and sportier suspension
4) obviously, exterior is different (your preference, mine is for the A4)
5) the "prestige" factor
Like most questions of "which is better?", the real answer is simply to test drive both until you decide.
Francis
Cactus Green 1.8TQTipS
Order code#3B25S6 -- if I can read the photocopied dealer price list effective May 15, 1998.
There is only one Passat that gets Syncro - it is fully loaded with everything - The only additional option is metallic paint - oh ya and the wagon at the rear.
I didn't like this choice because of the higher cost and the fact that it only comes with Tip. - I went with the A4...
