Sometimes it gets suck in the hole. If you install the new ring on the sensor with the old ring still in the hole the clip will not fit. Dealer sells clips cause they break easy too.

Thanks Peter, but the old o-ring came out with the old sensor. That wasn't the problem. Getting a good grip and angle with the clip was the problem. My hand is just a touch too big to be operating back there it seems.

make sure the resevoir cap is undone.
worst case, reuse the old oring.
got a belly pan on? try slapping it, if the clip is on it it might bounce around and bounce free.
worst worst case, try making a clip from a coat hanger until you can get a new one.

In fact, if I remember the clip is plastic so it's worth replacing anyhow. I think the key was using a small needle-nose vise-grip on the clip it gave me enough leverage to get the clip to get in.
