Default LONG 8mm allen socket

Anyone local to Rye (or New Rochelle), NY got a long 8mm socket? Mine seems to be missing and the Snap-on guy isn't going to be around until Monday. I need to use it to remove/replace the head bolts on a 1.8....sigh.

If you've ever done the head on a 1.8T motor you'll know what I'm talking about. It's an 8mm allen socket, but the hex part needs to be 2-3" long. You can use a normal allen key to get them off, but you need the socket for re-assembly since you need to torque everything to spec.

Cheers,

Haven't been to Sears in ages. I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I don't see how you can do it without a long socket. Some of the head bolts are sunk at least an inch. Usually, hex sockets are only about 3/4 of an inch long from the tip of the socket. So if you've got a bolt down at the bottom of a 1" tube, you can't reach it.

At the very least you can buy a spare 8mm allen, cut it to length and drop that into a 8mm socket.

Default It's not allen....

the 1.8T bolts are either triple square socket (12 point torx) or poly-drive.

Normal allen will strip the heads off the bolts, and then you'll be SOL.

It's all in the Bentley manual. You DO have a Bentley manual, right?

Yes, I have a Bentley manual now (which I bought from another AW reader), but I had been using the info from Alldata which didn't show the type of fastener. If you've ever done one of these heads you'd know that those bolt tubes are full of oil. I just assumed it was an hex since I haven't actually tried to take one out yet and the tubes are full of oil. I'll review the Bentley on my laptop at the shop before actually removing them. 8-)

They definitely have 8mm allen sockets for sale. Plus craftsman stuff in is guaranteed for life.
