Default I picked up an 85 jetta for nothing...

well, $325...

there are issues getting a 20 year old car. Wiring is falling apart, body can be crap (mine was a cali car, so little rust)

they can run for quite a while, and parts are SUPER cheap, not to mention you can junkyard a bunch of stuff...

the 1.8 8v motor isn't tremndously strong, but a mk2 jetta only weighs like 2350lbs, so you aren't pushing much weight around. I love mine, although I haven't been driving it much as I have been breaking in my new clutch on the audi before track season.

If you want a no brainer, get a civic. If you want a VW, a mk2 golf or jetta (85-92) can be had cheap, even slightly modded. I bought mine on a whim at $325. If you have 1500-2000, you can get a pretty nice already built one from someone on VW vortex. Check out their mk2 golf/jetta classifieds... 1800 will get you something nice.

Default oh, and...

I am too lazy to edit...

any 16v motor will cost noticeably more in parts, so if you want cheap, stay in the 8v land.

Parts are REALLY cheap. REALLY cheap. And there is most likely a pretty active VW group around you that can source you cheap parts.

You can even mod it cheaply.

Mine is still stock for the most part... albeit I put in euro quad round headlights. I have bought suspension for it, a 6 point cage ($25 off a local VW guy), a built 8v head + cam and matched manifolds ($500), a 2.0 blcok ($85), and I am redoing the interior...

It is a fun car... but it has been a project. But once I get it built up, I won't touch it much more and it will again become my daily.

I even autox'd it when I first got it. I had an oil leak that was a problem when hot, so I had to stop early, but it was fun. I have since got a bumper ;-)

The oil leak was the pan gasket and a stripped drain plug. It was $5 for the gasket and $25 for a whole new pan. Doesn't leak oil anymore.

Default Im looking to get a beater mk2 gti...

They are super cheap as mentioned and they drive like little go-karts.

fairly reliable, cheap and easy to fix, and fun to drive...you cant beat that

just my opinion...

Default And if you get a tercel from the late 70's early 80's it looks sweet too.

Wanted to beast one out, heck still do. Perhaps after my other future projects I will get on it.
