I am looking for a reliable independent Audi garage around Buffalo, NY to do an engine replacement for a 1998 Audi A4 2.8 quattro. It is an insurance job so credentials are a must. The insurance company wants to install a used engine but the Audi dealership is reluctant to do it. Any feedback from the experts? I am new to posting board but have used advice on the board
to complete basic maintenence jobs, IE: Brakes, airfilters, lights etc.
Thanks for any help

And specialize in VW/audi porsche. (if they can work on 911's then they have good enough credentials to work on an Audi).
Dont just take it to a local repair shop...

the heads rebuilt. Its a better option to rebuild the heads/timing belt/etc,....that way theres all new parts instead of a used engine with all the vulnerable parts that could essentially do the same thing.....

I would love to explore that option. What is the approximate cost on something like you suggested and are you located near Buffalo, NY?

well, in the case we had, the waterpump had deteriorated during hi rpm operation. The engine slipped time, and the valves made contact with the pistons, bending all 30 valves. When this happens, as long as the pistons and cylinder walls are ok, you can get the heads checked & rebuilt, and have all new parts on the front of the engine (timing belt/waterpump/etc) for around $4000 est.(labor, parts, machine shop cost). We'd found a replacement engine for the same car, since the guy thought his engine was blown, for $3000. It was used, had 40k+ miles, and all the parts that broke on his first engine were just as vulnerable. It would've cost more to install a used engine, plus it would be running the risk of doing the same damage!
You'll want to have the engine checked first to see if it can be saved, best way for that is to take off the heads (we'd charge a $600 tear down which would be put towards the total).
We're located just south of Baltimore, MD. Sorry, but unless you've got a trailer setup, it doesn't look like we'll be taking care of it. Ironic, I'm in NYC right now.....
