Default Was looking at the total quartz energy 9000 @ purems

I have been running GC for a while but the price is just going up and up and up. Anyone know about total quartz 9000? And what weight would you recommend for living in mass. Summer has hot days 80-90's and cold cold winters.

I was assuming 5w-40 b/c that is the approved weight on the audi oil list of approval.

Thanks guys

Default I get bored of an oil after a year too.Total/Elf is absolutely worth a try.0w-30 meets VW & Saab

It's the thicker 30 with a premium base hitting the higher HT/HS >3.5cP of Euro specs, an ACEA "A3" oil. MB 229.5 is much newer and meaningfull than the VW502 which is from 1998, run on an old VW 2.Slo. Even better is the "Opel" spec GM LL-A-025 that Saab uses. The -54C Pour-point is pretty insane.

I'm actually using the same oil as Saab Synth in my Accord but prefer a thinner A5 oil for my app. Without severe mods, skip the 5w-40. Do a UOA!

MERCEDES-BENZ : MB page 229.5 (MB, Chrysler)
BMW : BMW Longlife 01 (BMW, Mini)
VOLKSWAGEN : 502.00/505.00 (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda...)
GENERAL MOTORS : GM-LLA025 / B025 (Level) (Opel, Saab, Vauxhall, Chevrolet...)
RENAULT : Gasoline and Diesel
PEUGEOT, CITROEN :Gasoline and Diesel PSA E05/D05 Niv 3

http://www.purems.com/products/5806.pdf</a

Default Well, their specs are more similar to GC than anything made. It's hair-splitting. I'd try it, wtf?

If you went to a 5w-40, you'd feel like it was bogging down the engine. So, if you want to try a new oil, another Euro 30 would be the way to go, that leaves MaxLife Synth, Mobil 1 10w-30 HM and umm...this one.

Default Well do you prefer 0w-30 or 5w-40 for the 1.8t

I always ran 0w-30 GC because it was supposed to be great, if it still top notch I'll just stick with it even though the price is high, unless there is a reason I shouldnt or unless there is something else out that is considered "better" or equivalent for cheaper.

Default In a turbo, fast oiling is more important than extra thick viscosity. The cheapest is M1 10w-30 HM

as far as thicker "Euro" 30s go, but it would be a lil too thick in cool/cold temps for a turbo. So, you see the best oil is infact dependent on many factors. That M1 10w-30 HM is built like a race oil, will bun-off VERY minimally, but is not so great in cold, so maybe better for a non-turbo that burns oil or at a minumum, mid-summer in a 1.8t.

It comes down more to your personal preference once you have the visc range correct. imo, 0w-30 Euro is best and you could simply try something new and see for yourself. I'd say too to try a UOA for the heck of it. It's hard to talk you out of German Syntec, on-sale it's cheap and now PepBoys carries it too. They and AutoZone always have specials that getthe filter+oil price down low. My guess is the the Pure MS/Total would be more expensive than Syntec, but I also say it's not enough money to worry about. The M1 10w-30 HM is $23/5q at WalMart. The M1 TDT 5w-40 is just a hair more money and another interesting oil, same thing with Rotella T Synth, but a cheap $16/g. In the end, you have to decide. Rotella + Auto-Rx is a great combo.

Light Mobil 1 0w-30 has a $5/5q rebate, great for deep winter and cheap at $17/5q with rebate. IN the end, you have to decide. I wish I could say to try SynPower 5w-40 or Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 but it is hard to find. SynPower 5w-40 can be ordered a lot of places and is great, better than the dealer-style Syntec 5w-40. However Rotella Synth 5w-40 and M1 TDT make them kind of pointless.

Since you don't have mods, you could actually try a light 5w-30 like these otc brands and Mobil 1 0w-30, do a UOA and see how they run. You might get low wear and excellent mpg. SynPower 5w-30 is $20/5q at AutoZone with a BOSCH filter and then a $10 rebate from Valvoline making it a $10 oil change. That allows money for a UOA or Auto-Rx or whatever. You have to pull the trigger. Is price really what you are after, something exotic, meeting VW specs, max mpg, lowest wear, best in cold, longest service??? GC is most of them but like I originally said, I get bored with just one oil. I have a hoard oil oil here here that pales some auto store's.

Which visc, 0w-30 or 5w-40? I know you have extensive mods and fueling tweaks.

Default I am using the 5w-40, heating the oil to 200 deg. before starting car.

I have 80lbs by time it catches. Fueling on mine isnt and hasnt been a problem since initial tuning, as it usually is until you get in the zone. My problem was keeping enough oil pressure at idle w/ warm oil to be sure I was getting some oil to the cams. For awhile I turned the idle up to 1300 to make sure I had 25lbs, this was on the 0-30GC Syntec. I can now run it at 1000 rpm w/25lbs pressure on the ELF 5-40. I tried both Castrol and Mobil 5-40 and they were worse than the 0-30GC and went to about 15lbs, the GC was at 18lbs. @ 1000rpm. I know this isnt very scientific, but it cured a problem for me. I may not even have a problem @ 18lbs of oil pressure @ the cams, but I feel much better w/25lbs. since I am running a stiffer spring and more lift. Damn thing probably wont last 30k miles anyway, no use to accelerate that process by under oiling.

Default Wicked.

The 0w-30 probally has a much different formulation. I still hold to that Porsche-Approval on Syntec being the only 30 weight to meet that venerable spec.
