New 5-series will have 3 models. The standard 4.4L V8 (333HP), 380HP Twin Turbo Inline 6 (380HP) and the new M5 with a 5.5L V10 (500hp)
AutoZine had a little comparison to the A6/S6/RS6 and the mercedes E-Class.
All 3 new 5 series engine will be more power then both all "6" series cars from Audi and all Mercedes E-Class. In fact, Audi has the least HP of them all:
A6 - 4.2L V6, 300HP
S6 - 4.2L V8, 340HP
RS6 - 4.2L twinturbo V8, 450HP
Mercedes 2 E-Class are 5.0L V8 with 308HP and a 5.5L superchargef V8 with 476HP
Audis new badass RS6 may have quattro, but the new M5 is gonna smoke it.

did bmw just forget that we have a finite amount of gas? looking at those numbers it looks like they
are basically doing what I hate in american cars - throwin just gobs of hp / liters under the hod to compensate for an otherwise pig of a car.
when i was in HS, i drove my grandfathers 282hp v8 bmw 740il. I loved that car. I can't even begin to imagine what a 500hp m5 would feel like.
Those numbers just seem kind of....execesive for the typical 5 series driver.

Yes, they have had that option on Euro M3s for a long time, and coming to the new M3 in '03...
Its called SMD I think, and it's just like Ferrari's F1 tranny option. You could have it on the last generation M3 in Europe, but it was something like a $7K option. On the new M3, the price of the tranny is going to be lower. I know someone in my Audi club with a '03 M3 on order with the SMD tranny option.
