Lots of questions in regards to headlights. HID? Xenon? E-code? 2000 Euro?
I have a 98 1.8TQ, and I'm looking for upgrades for the headlight units. I understand that currently there are a few options that I can choose from.
1. Change to Superwhites bulb (Which I have already tried 3 brands of H7's. Results were disappointing.)
2. Get a pre 99.5 Euro E-code headlight units with glass reflectors. Recently the price of these units have dropped significantly ($300 for a pair). So maybe it is a good time and last chance to get these units.
3. LLTek Xenons. Looks awesome. $1500, too expensive.
4. Bellof or Philips HID conversion. These HID Xenon units has gas-discharged bulbs that fit into the H-7 "slots." In order to generate the 30,000 volts needed for gas-discharged bulds, two transformers are needed. Again, they don't come cheap, $1200-1600.
So, right now I'm leaning towards the pre 99.5 Euro E-code units since the budget fits me quite nicely and the units could be installed in less than an hour.
However, I'm wondering when the post 99.5 Euro headlight units (one piece units without the orange blinkers) will arrive in the states?
The other question is, are the post 99.5 headlight units gas-discharged HID? Or they still uses H-7's but have awesome reflectors? What's going to be the price on those?
So are the post 99.5 A4 units the same as the 2000 S4 units?
And finally, what do you think I should do? Get the pre 99.5 Euro lights for cheap now? Or wait for post 99.5 Euro to come?
Thanks
Kev

Some answers.....
<i>2. Get a pre 99.5 Euro E-code headlight units with glass reflectors. Recently the price of these units have dropped significantly ($300 for a pair). So maybe it is a good time and last chance to get these units.</i>
I'm not 100% sure about the Bosch E-codes, but my Valeo E-codes do not have a glass reflector...it's plastic. The outer lens is glass however, perhaps that's what you're thinking of?
<i>However, I'm wondering when the post 99.5 Euro headlight units (one piece units without the orange blinkers) will arrive in the states?</i>
I've heard that Air & Water Enterprises will be carrying the Valeo projector-beam Euro's...might want to give Todd a call and ask about availability and pricing.
<i>The other question is, are the post 99.5 headlight units gas-discharged HID? Or they still uses H-7's but have awesome reflectors? What's going to be the price on those?</i>
Both...you can buy just the normal projector-beam lights that would take an H7 bulb OR you can buy Xenon projector-beam lights.
<i>So are the post 99.5 A4 units the same as the 2000 S4 units?</i>
I think you're confusing the "standard" projector beam headlights with the Xenon projector-beam lights. Both are now available on 2000 A4's and the S4 has (as you know) Xenon's as standard equipment.

European (i.e., "e-code") headlight information....
I've found that the Stern Lighting website is an excellent resource when it comes to understanding automobile lighting. See the link below...
