low fuel warning problems

About a month ago the fuel gague in my 98.5 A4 2.8 started occassionally reading no fuel, the light and warning buzzer would come on, and then a few seconds later go away. I had plenty of gas. Sometimes it goes a few days without doing it at all, sometimes it does it every 10 minutes or so.
I can't seem to identify a pattern (i.e. amount of fuel in tank, outside temperature, amount of time running the vehicle, etc.) Any ideas?
Unfortunately I now have 54k miles so I'm out of warranty and afraid of the notorious repair bills at the dealer. Any suggestions are most welcomed!

Audi was aware that there are problems with the fuel gauge. They noticed the problem mostly with the A6, but A4's seem to have the needles that stick as well or show no gas. Your out of luck since Audi has not made an attempt at repairing this issue (no recall available at this time).

It is actually the reader in the tank that measures the gas that gets screwed up. I know it was the same part that the A6's had recalled. Mine was still under warranty at the time. I suggest you bite the bullet and get it fixed. I kept putting it off and eventually ran out of gas one day, because the gauge was so off.
