Driving to lunch today my low oil maintenance light came on. I promptly pulled over and checked the engine and oil, then drove to the nearest shop and dropped in some Mobil 1.

I called my dealership service, and the advisor mentioned to me that the low oil light was nothing to be alarmed about -- especially since I'm due for my 20K change (last service @ 10K). He mentioned to me that the low oil light comes on if reserves reach ~ 1 quart.

So... am I to believe that my 2001 A4 ate 2.7 quarts of oil?! I've never seen any oil leaks or puddles when I park. I checked the belly pan, and there wasn't any noticeable oil residue.

Anyone else ever have their car eat oil like this? I'm gonna be checking my oil every time I gas up now... and keep a couple of extra quarts in the trunk.

2.7 seems excessive. You should check your oil once a week at any rate.

I think he meant 1 qt low, not @ 1 qt. You should be checking it that often & keeping 1 qt w/ u

Thanks -- that makes a lot more sense. Can't imagine the engine running on 1 qt.
