Default Made an interesting discovery about our trusted dealership..

My wife's 1.8t went to get it's last service at Dwight Harris VW to have the oil changed. (where she's had all her services done since she bought the car). Well, 3k miles later, we start seeing the oil light come on. A "Stop" and "Oil" light came on. She immediately stopped the car and called me at work. I came to where she was and noticed that the oil stick was bone dry. After 2 quarts of oil and I was able to see the oil reach the bottom of the engraving. The lights go out and we take the car home.

I'm under the car to check for leaks and it's as clean as a brand new car under the hood as well as under the belly pan. There's no possible way there couldn't have been an oil leak, too clean. So all this time, she's been driving around with 1 quart of oil in the engine? I'm so Pissed off I don't know what to do. Has anyone had an experience like this? How much damage could have been done to the engine to get that low on oil?

Default If the oil was so low for 3k, why didn't the oil light come one before?

Something caused the oil to drop below a threshold and trigger the light.
Either there is a leak, or possibly the car is buring oil.

It's pretty safe to assume the car is using oil

Default I don't know. It doesn't make sense. I guess maybe it's burning oil, but that's alot of oil!

I put 2 and a half quarts in and it still wasn't reading full.

Default Leaking valve cover or cam tensioner gasket?

She could have a leak in one of those gaskets and have the oil leak into the engine compartment, where it was burned/baked off.

Thats odd because with that much oil being burnt you would smell it pretty quick

Default Re: Leaking valve cover or cam tensioner gasket?

I have the same problem w/ a suspicious oil leak that they found after my warrantee ended. If this is a known problem, why doesn't Audi USA repair it for us at no charge? The dealer even admitted and I quote: "It was poorly designed." I urge you to please call Audi to file a complaint (1-800-822-2834). If they get enough of them, then they will have to force a recall and acknowledge this as an issue. I've already called AudiUSA.
