my 99.5 1.8t engine just dies after it's started. i took it in to a mechanic and they read a faulty IAC code. others have had this problem and they fixed it by cleaning it out, but some other have said that if it creates a error code then it needs to be replaced. do i need to replace this or just clean it? thanks.

Sounds like you've got a massive vacuum leak, dead MAF, or a faulty throttle body?
Of course, it's difficult to diagnose over the web....

there's no idle valve on a 1.8t.idle is controlled by the ecm.how does the car run?does it stall on decel?if so,the throttle blade may be dirty.if the blade is really gunked up,it can set maf faults.
