Default Might have messed up the bearing installation...

It seems like I have a noisy right rear bearing again, and I reflected back to the day when I used my hubshark to press the bearing back in.

The hubshark doesn't seem to have the exact size 'pancake' needed to press the bearing all the way into the knuckle cavity, so I had to use one that was smaller in diameter of the bearing.

See the pretty picture for an explanation. I'm wondering if I effed up the bearing somehow.

I'm sure '77-911 will soon post a pic of the SIR B90. I wish I would have bought that instead of the hubshark.

Default I don't recall the bearing needing to go in past the width of the bearing.

like you have pictured in the 2nd diagram

Default The diagram is a little exaggerated for clarity, but the existing bearing was driven slightly

into the housing. I'm guessing 3 to 4mm.

Here's a couple of pics from Rookie18's gallery. He might have lucked out driving the bearing in with the supplied installer, but mine definitely would NOT go past the knuckle opening. Maybe a manufacturing defect? It wouldn't have to be much wider than 75mm to become a problem..

Rookie18: Sorry for hot-linking, I'll drop the links if you let me know. I'm not sure if you post here anymore?

Default never put pressure on the inner race; would have been better off

using a socket the right size and using that in between the hub shark + bearing

yes you might have fudged your bearing

Never do that. You most certainly caused damage/shortened life.

It does certainly. Maybe 2-3mm or so.

And that's why I let my shop do wheel bearings.

Default next time use the old wheel bearing to help push it the rest of the way

it'll be sticking out enough that you can tap it out again once the new bearing is seated properly.

Default Live and learn. :) I thought about doing that, but thought that it might

get pressed in too far to remove. In reading another rear bearing article, it looks like you can smack it out with a hammer.. I'll give it a shot.
