Default Misfires on cyl 3 - 1.8T AEB

Started the car yesterday after a short drive. Barely running.
Diagnostic shows tons of misfires on cyl 3.

- put different coil pack on: no change
- swapped spark plug 1-3: no change
- swapped coil pack 1-3: no change
- swapped ECU: no change

Do the coil packs get the low voltage signal directly from ECU (or is there another Ignition Control Module)?

What to check for first?

Have you check your fuel injector at cyclinder 3? Is it being commanded to fire? Is it firing?

Will get a noid light and check the injector. Good point. Spark plug in cyl 3 was pretty black, vs. cyl 1 (nice light brown).

Pulled injectors. cleaned with carb cleaner a bit.
Put back in. Engine running on all 4.
Today, running on 3 cyl again. Misfires on cyl 3.
Pulling the plug off injector 3 no effect.
Swapped injector 3 with 1. Same. So its not the injector.

Haven't gotten around to go to Autozone to pick up a noid light, but will do tonight.

Also want to bring a set of new spark plugs. What type/model number should I get?

Stage 3, Giac PC16 tune.

That means it is the ECU or a wire. I wonder if your chip is soldered? Those are known to have issues. Later A4s had the software upgrade

Got the noid light, and cyl 3 injector is 'firing'.

Put new (copper) spark plugs in. No change.

Pulled no 3 coil pack and plugged spark plug in. Can't see a spark.

Is there an 'Ignition Control Module'?

I switched ECUs. No change.

Found what looks like an ignition control module in the intake area. Bosch 0 227 100 211. Can they be tested?

Last check was I have +12V on ignition coil.

As far as I know, spark is generated by 'closing' to ground.

Found that the 1.8T AEB (just like the 2.8 I have) DOES HAVE a Ignition Control Module (sits (like in the 2.8) on the airbox, with cooling fins inside the box; 1x 4pin out, 1x 5pin (middle is ground) in.

Cylinder 3 shows different value (put 1.5 Volt on inside between ground and the 4 cyl, measured output voltage).

Looks like my ICM is bad.

Part number is

Bosch 0 227 100 211

Will look for one.

Now you know why Audi calls the ignition control module a POS.
