OK, given some posts about mixing fuel octane that I've seen on here and what I've previously been told I decided to try and get some answers.
I doubted the ability to mix different octane fuels to get an average octane, by apperently I was wrong. I decided to put in an email to a relative who is a chemical/environmental engineer for Texaco living in LA. (I've also mentioned that there were some comments on the lack of higher grades in SoCa.) Here's her comments for those interested:
"OK. The answer to the gasoline question is that yes, you can definitely combine different octane gasolines to get an intermediate grade. At most
of our storage terminals, we will only store 91/92 (premium) and 87 (regular) and then blend them into the delivery truck in some specified ratio to get an 89 octane (mid grade). My understanding is that 92 is the highest octane sold normally at service stations nationally.
Apparently there has been some trouble making 92 in California because of all the other requirements on the gasoline mandated out here, so all the companies have been selling 91
octane, but hope to get back to 92 soon."
The only unknown is the "specified ratio" that it takes to make the mid-grade fuel.

>100 Octane uses additional additives to achieve apparent octane ratings over 100, ie a 104 octane fuel has additives sufficient to make it as stable as a theoretical blend with an octane rating of 104. Those will throw off your calculation.
Also I regularly buy 93 octane here in SC, and 94 is available if I try a little harder.

Works great, and most of the octane boosters contain toluene anyways. You can buy it at chemical warehouses, and sherwin williams. It's basically equivalent to 114 octane.

A while back I noticed that Sunoco stations offer 4 grades at the pump, but only have 3 holding tanks. None of the gas station attendants I asked ever knew anything about this. One day there was a truck there filling the tanks, so I asked the driver. He said the tanks hold 87, 93, and 94, and the 89 is a blend of the 87 and 94.

Dumb gas question: Since octane rating is supposed to be percentage of octane, how is there 105, etc
