Mobil 1 10w30
#2
Do you mean the Hi-Miles version w/Euro specs or the thin regular one that shouldn't be used in A4?
Regular Mobil 1 30 weights are too thin to meet the visc and HT/HS requirments of VW and other Euro specs. OTOH, the new Hi-Mi version are thick enough and carry the Generic ACEA A3 spec, which VW 502 is based on. For instance, the M1 30 weight has a technical visc measurment of 10cSt@+100c, while the in-spec 0w-40 Mobil 1 is >14cSt, quite a difference. You did not mention which of the 3 domestic engines you have. With the V6, you might experience accelerated burn-off and likely increased wear rates. In a 1.8t, even worse could be turbo failure. You should slop in a q of M1 15w-50 or even better a bottle of Valvoline SynPower Oil Treatment, that will thicken and give the additive bump Mobil 1 sorely needs. Which oil were you last using? A common complain about Mobil 1 is burn-off and loud valvetrain. Most experienced people have switched to Pennzoil Platinum for these reasons.
One nice thing about M1 Hi-Miles in addition to the thicker weight is that it's not formulated to current API "SM" specs, which limit additive levels, rather the older SL spec. It's practicly a race oil. 10w-30 HM and 10w-40 HM both claim ACEA A3.
