my 1-2 shifts are not smooth. is the jolt from these shifts bad?

It's wear-and-tear on the clutch. But it will get better with practice.
Your tranny can take the abuse. The clutch is a wear item, and is the "fuse" in the system which will sacrifice itself to save the tranny.
Since you are aware that your shifts are not smooth, you can practice getting them smooth.
It should only take a few hours of seat time. If you get to drive in stop-and-go traffic, you'll learn very quickly.
The people who think that clunky shifts are the way it's supposed to be (like my friend) are the ones who are going to be replacing their clutch more often.
BTW, I have also taught my wife how to drive manual on my car. So even with some awfully abrupt shifts and a few stalls, the clutch is still okay.
