So it is normal for cars to burn oil when they are fairly new? Also, should I switch to synthetic based on the oil consumption rate and not on the actual mileage of my car?
Thanks again for the info.

I don't think you need synthetic with the 2.8. I prefer to change every 3K and use Pennziol 10-30.
the 2.8 engine does not have to lub the turbo that is in the 1.8T so it does not see the extreme temps that the synthetics help.

Although mine didn't burn any oil (I'm at 7500 miles and switched at 5000 to Mobil 1). My main consideration for switching was the fact that I wasn't burning oil. If I were you, I would top up the difference (remember always to check oil level after the engine has been switched off for a while and on a flat surface) moniter the oil level every 1000 miles between now and your 7500 mile change, and if you are still losing oil, not to switch yet. (You might have been burning oil during your early break-in period). Hopefully your rings would have seated before your next service. Choose you oil weight based on what Audi recommends and choose the lightest weight oil of the recommended range for your climate for best fuel efficiency and max power(not that we'll feel it).
Good luck!!
