My experience changing the rear diff gear oil...
When I first read the article, I thought "wow, seems just as easy as an oil change"...I sure was wrong.
I went to the store and purchased everything for the change, 2 bottles of 75w-90 mobil 1 gear oil, a suction gun and a 10mm hex socket.
I get home, put the car up on the ramps (everything is good until this point!) I try to get the fill plug loose...nothing. I spray some penetrating oil on it and figure I'd try it on the lift at work the next day.
That didn't go so well. I split the mac socket in half right away. I sprayed some more penetrating oil on and figure I'd try again the next day...
So today comes around, I get home from work and put it on the ramps again. I decided to try and see if the drain plug would break loose, it did no problem. (didn't empty it). So I gave the fill plug another try - nothing. Gave it some more penetrating oil and tried again - still nothing. I then made a pipe to attach to my socket wrench for some more leverage - the plug wouldnt budge, instead it stripped and is now totally rounded out.
For something that seemed as simple as an oil change, this sure wasnt...I'm not sure what to do now, I do want to change the gear oil.
My rear axle seals were leaking so I took it to the dealer about 4 months ago and had them replace them, they said they did that and topped off the fluid. The fill plug looked like it was never touched, so I wanted to make sure it had the proper amount in.
I hate this car, everything that can go wrong has so far since I bought it. Turbo, control arms, tie rod ends, springs broke, coolant and oil leaks, and a bunch of other little things...
So basically, if anyones looking to do this their self, be careful, it can be alot harder than it looks...

Similar experience on my '98.5
Couldn't/can't get the filler plug out - same situation as you. Haven't tried the drain plug; have read warnings about removing the filler plug first (if the drain plug comes out but can't get the filler plug out, you're in deep doo-doo).
