My Gas Guage is Possessed
I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 (Not a Quattro). For about 2 years now my gas guage swings back and forth intermittently from empty to full and in between regardless of the actual amount of gas I have in the tank. Many times it will just read empty for a few days and then swing back up to the actual measure. Has anyone experienced this that perhaps can give me some guidance on the issue and how to repair.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I k now the fuel sending unit is known to fail. There is a free fix in the database, I would search
since I dont remember exactly what it is but you can adjust something near the fuel tank.

I can fix something near the fuel tank underneath the car or fix something near the fuel tank cap on the right side of my car?

If MaxLife is some kind of solder that magically repairs the abrasion due to the
faulty routing of the wire on the sender unit I think it would do quite nicely. Otherwise, follow the diy in the tech section.

Fuel Sending Unit. The DIY fix is not permanent, replacing the unit completely....
is the simplest fix. Soldering the connection lasted 3-4 months for me both times and then I finally just bought a new unit.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit. The DIY fix is not permanent, replacing the unit completely....
I have had this problem before - In April 2006, an Audi shop installed a new sending unit (part # 8D0-919-673-B) and washer (part # 1J0-919-133). I still have the invoice. And now, less than 2 years later, it's happening again. Do you think there's a simple contamination problem that can be corrected with some type of cleaning?
