Default didn't you post recently that you warm-up the car for 30 minutes at idle? I can't imagine that

being the issue, but what is the benefit?

Default Generally I let it warm up for 5-10 so the forged internals have time to expand.

Its wad to rev the motor with the pistons cold, you might knock of the skirts on the pistons. You can hear the pistons slapping around when you first crank it when its cold.

Default More damage will be done at idle than in small revs. I dont agree w/warming forged pistons!

Have you noticed they dont slap above 1500rpms or so. Idle is the worst thing for forged internals.

Default

Yup. Driving to warmup is the only way IMO.

Default So your saying pistons slapping around in the cylinders at higher revs is better?

doesnt seem likely to me. To each their own, i will not agree with you on this one.

Default well consider going the BB turbo route with the coolant jackets.

I haven't heard of any of these type of failures occouring on turbos with coolant jackets.

FWIW the 1.8T has very high EGTs to begin with(IIRC in the 1600F - 1800F), and Audi obviously saw that coolant jackets around the bearings to keep them cool. I'm thinking that the old oil lubricated journal bearing turbos are more prone to coking because of this, especially in these cars.

The GT series (ball bearing and coolant jackets) also uses a lot less oil, because they have restrictors of like 0.035". I've heard that hardly any oil is stored in the line after the car is shut off, and what tiny amount of oil is there quickly drains or is prevented from coking by the coolant jackets.

just my 0.02.

Default I think you're 100% on the ticket here. For now I am sticking with my home built K04.

K03 sport (thanks to ImAwsome) with a "kit" from G-Pop to adapt it into a K04. Cheap and a fun little project. ;-)
