Possible explanation...
My old 99.5 gearshift surround peeled as well. It should be covered under warrenty.
Audi seems to have some problems with surface preperation with their suppliers. If the surface of the plastic has any contaminants, the coating will peel right up. Another cause is lack of sufficent texture on the plastic parts. The coatings usually need something to adhere to.
