Default i used to run amsoil 5w-40 euro blend ...

i have never once had to add oil, always stays dead middle of the dipstick. My temps with 5w-40 amsoil euro blend hit 175 on back roads and about 200 on highway. Never past 200. I was planning on running 0w-30 german castrol which i have been told is a very thick 0w-30 almost 0w-40. So it seems like it will be fine to run in the summer ... yes ... no?

Thanks

Default Most 30 weight is 10cSt @+100C, on the thinnest end of 30 weight. GC at 12cSt is the thick end of 30

Mechanics, frankly, have their head up their *** and think they know everything when in fact they stick with concepts they learned a lifetime ago. Would a 40 weight that shears down below GC's visc be better? He's probally thinking about normal thin 30 weight that shears down to a 20? GC starts and finishes exactly where it should be, 12cSt, but MORE importantly has the HT/HS to meet ACEA A3/VW 502 specs. Is Porsche Approval not sufficient? Not to bash your mechanic, but I'd bet the title to my car he has no idea what HT/HS is what specs are needed to meet approvals, etc. All mechanics hear is "0w" and they freeze like deer in the headlights. Funny, they think that 0w-XX means an oil is thin when that is generally not the case...GC is quite thick at most cool and cold temps. "W" just means it passes a cold-cranking test at astonishingly cold temps (-30f for 0w rating). Ask him a few questions about what we went over previously...but be gentle. The bottom line is wear, NOTHING wears at a lower rate than GC, PERIOD. Ask they guy how many Used Oil lab Analysis he is basing his "opinions" on. You have to be firm to counter the ignorance that a lifetime of "knowing" falsehoods brings. My mechanic is a Euro specialist, he uses Syntec 5w-50 by the drum. Never pulled a UOA, never looked into specs, just "thicker is better". Like I said, Fuchs Titan 0w-20 is "safe in any engine" and I know a very smart amatauer Triboligist who runs Motorcraft 5w-20 in his 2005 Ferrari and Maybach...he pulls UOAs every time and reports directly to Factory Ferrari Techs. lol, does your mechanic even have a computer? Direct him to Bob's for a Re-edumacation.

Default

B6 manual states 0w-30 is Factory-Fill. German Syntec 0w-30 aka "SLX" to be precise.

Default My mechanic is the same...FIFTY WEIGHT, for MANLY-MEN!

1.8t does fine on Mobil 1 30 weight. I would not use it in the V6, but some UOAs from 2.7tt are great on oils like DuraBlend 5w-30 and other basic oils. I may be over-estimating the need for thick oil in the V6, better safe than sorry...however consumption will be better. I dunno about Porsche Approval, the newest GC formula has changed, same specs and performance, but maybe not yet submitted to Porsche approval. The new 0w-30 in the USA is SLX Longtec. Still a dated formula by Euro standards. If you want the latest ****, go to BMW and ask for their 0w-40 aka Castrol Formula RS aka Castrol Edge Sport aka BP Visco 9000.

Default after viewing the site in the link ... i got curious

it shows the picture of the GC, well my bottle doesnt look like that. The back stamp is the same but does not say porsche approved. Also i poured some oil in a cup and it isnt green it is brownish yellow. On the front it looks diff it has a yellow rectangle that says european formula inside of the rectangle in red.

Any ideas what is going on?

Default GC is no longer green. New formula is SLX Longtec. Go to Castrol.co.uk for their real line-up...

iirc, Formula RS 0w-40 is now Edge Sport 0w-40 but there is a lot of interesting **** there. Check out the race sponsorships.
Notice that at Halford's, Castrol Edge 0w-30 is 14 GBP per litre, ouch.

Default few, i got nervous, and no idea about the porsche approved thing?

because if its newer you would assume that they would have all the updates and porsche approved would be on the back of the bottle, if it was on the old one.

Default quattro Pete claims Longtec is formulated to deal with poor fuel quality in Eastern Europe...

Post-Katrina, that's what we had here anyway. I doubt if it's as bad, but still. Katrina took a toll on Mobil 1, they dropped the Starburst and API specs on the bottles for s while. You can red-up on it at Bob's. So, plain SLX/GC is an old formula that had Porsche Approval, newer GC/SLX Longtec might not have been submitted but has the same general specs with more Mg and less Ca...UOAs show it to work the same. You are on your own from here ;o)
