If it happens when you turn it all the time, sounds like your power steering belt or fluid. If it only happens at a certain position could be the steering column. I had mine replaced by the dealer when I had a squeak. They had to take the airbag and entire steering column out.

I no longer have a warranty on my car (99.5)...and it does happen quite regularly now on all turns. So...i'm hoping it's the less serious situation. Any ideas on cost?

Could be lower control arms. I have the same problem, and A4s are known for the short life of the factory control arms.

Just check to make sure the power steering fluid is topped off. If that does not solve the problem check the belts out. If it is your steering wheel it is going to be costly. At least a 2 hr job.

I sometimes (about 70% of the time) get a squeak when I turn the wheel hard during parking or backing out of a driveway, or something like that. Not during turns at regular driving speeds, though. It's been like that for at least two months, and it doesn't seem to be getting worse. I'll check the power steering fluid tomorrow, but if that's not it, should I take it to a mechanic right away, or can I wait to see if it gets worse?
