Default My temp gage drops from half to zero while I'm driving..

....and a small engine-like odor develops in the car. I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong. I only just got the car 5 weeks ago (99.5 A4 1.8TQM). I haven't noticed a difference in the driving, but then again...I was just learning how to drive manual then as well. Any ideas?

Default If your talking coolant temps

it might be that your thermostat is stuck wide open and the coolant is in constant cycle.

Default well mine does that too, except without the odor

i'm pretty sure it's the coolant temp sensor. if you run a search, you'll find that it's happened before. but i dunno about the odor. i know in my case, the sensor is prob busted and is not reading the temp correctly, but in actuality, the temp is probably normal.

Default IIRC you dont have to pull the water pump or the timing belt to pull

out the thermostat on a 1.8t. I know they did not have to do that on my because the shop put 2 in my car and both would not open at all, so I drove the car for a day with no thermostat till they ordered me a new one.

Default I just replaced my coolant temp sensor to treat the same problem, but it didn't help

I think I have a dead thermostat Oh well, only six hours labour to fix it...

Try to fix the coolant temp sensor first though, it costs $25 and takes less than an hour to replace, assuming you drain the coolant without removing the bumper. You need to take about 2-3qt of coolant out to empty the pipe the sensor sits in, at least on a 2.8.

Default I got my car a month ago....

.....it's a 99 A4 1.8TQM and it had 17,231 miles on it. The dealer 3 year was up, but I purchased a 100,000/5 year bumper to bumper warranty that the dealer said covers everything from the cd player to the turbo. It was $1,250 and in my opinion well worth the money.

Oh, and I LOVE my car!!!
