Default Mysterious Ratlle off throttle - any ideas?

In off throttle conditions there is a mysterious rattle eminating from somewhere up front. When coasting, no matter what gear i am in, the rattle is there and then around ~1000 rpm is stops abruptly. Applying slight prssure to the accelerator causes the rattle to disappear. Any ideas?

Also - when I first drive off there is an audible clicking noise that seems to match engine speed - it disappears after 10-20 seconds - if i drive away very slowly I can not here it. It does this even if the car is still warm after sitting for at least 15 minutes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an MTM exhaust an there was a plate with a serial number spot welded to my exhaust's middle pipe that would rattle at 2,000 rpm. I found it bu hitting my exhaust with my fist and listening. Once I found it I just ripped it off with some pliers. Even if this isn't your problem, using the palm of your hand and smacking a few parts is a time proven test for finding rattles....

Default is it a rattle or more of a 'metallic shrill-like sound'?

I have a '98 1.8TQ also. Ever since new, I've have had an intermittent shrill (not quite a rattle, faint, but obvious) off throttle, as the rpm drop through about 3000. Several dealer inquiries have been unsuccessful - primarily because it's intermittent. I had the new TT bypass valve installed last year, and I think that helped. In fact I haven't heard the sound for some time now. I think it is the bypass valve...
