Default Need advise

Seriously considering buying a up to $20K A4. Most likely a 96 or 97. Is 2.8 or 1.8T better to boost the horse power in and how do the stock ones compare. Any reasons why i should or shouldn't buy one and what to watch out for when buying one. Any advise would be great, thanks

I don't know if you subscribe to Consumer Reports online service, but their reliability ratings for the A4 show consistent improvement from 96 to 98 but there are areas they rate "worse than average" -- and they only give "really good" ratings to the 99 and 00 models. My '98 model was rated above average in all categories except electrical, where it was average. The '96 and '97 models were rated below average (i.e. worse) for electrical.

Default A little advice from a recent 96' 2.8 A4 owner

Get the 1.8T. If you drive a stick now, get a stick for the audi. I love my 2.8, but if I could go back in time, I would get a 1.8T. Most aftermarket stuff is made for the 1.8T. The only setback is that you can't get leather in a 1.8T --that is the ONLY setback. The 1.8T is lighter, and has a much sportier feel (not to mention you can "chip" it for about $400 and get 200+ hp out of the engine). In my humble opinion, the 2.8 is made for older drivers, who want a comfortable car. Try for 1997 or younger. Do your best to find one with the factory sports suspension, unless you don't mind spending around $700 for aftermarket sport springs + shocks.
96' A4 2.8 Q

Default Consumer Reports are rated by owner's experiences. What you describe is typical of all cars in

their ratings. Newer...fewer problems. Older....more problems. My '95 Blazer was rated fairly high in 96 and 97 Consumer Reports. Five years later it is much worse than average in every category. Two years from now the 00 and 01 A4s will probably rate just like the 97 and 98s of today.

I'd buy (which I did), a 95 90 instead of the A4...same 2.8 engine, more room and more unique. Cost is a fraction of the A4...If you really want a car that you can get serious hp out of, I'd go after a 200 20V or a 92-94 S4...much nicer cars than the small body Audis.
--Jim 95 90SQ
