this will be the first oil change I am doing on the A4 and have a question about filters. As I remember Audi uses Mann filters which are supposed to be really good but I can't get to my dealer before I go away on our rode trip. But, there is a Napa nearby and I was told their Napa Gold filters are made by Mann. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone used them? Any other recommendations? There is a VW dealer kind of close, would I be better just to get a filter for a 1.8T?

I was in the same situation yesterday. The local autostore sells mostly Fram, but they did have K&N oil filters, so I picked up one of those. HP-2005 is the part number for the correct K&N oil filter for the 99.5 1.8T. I've also heard of people buying a 10-pack of OE oil filters from www.germanautoparts.com so that they always have one on hand.

the filter from a Passat would be a direct fit, but do a search before you go buying one. I'm sure it's been done before.
