Default Need help identifing code 16396 and what could cause it. Its not in the bentley book.

It is code

16396-Bank 1: Camshaft A (intake): Advance Setpoint not reached (Over-Retarded)
P0012-35-10---Intermittnet

The code is not in the bentley book. The car is my 2001 A4 1.8tqm. It has an APR, Ignition solutions coilpacks, panel filter, and muffler.

The car does not run that badly, but the boost is very inconsistent. If I do a pull starting from between 2500 rpm and 3600 rpm It will go to 20psi sometimes 19psi and hold to around 4200 rpm and then drop very sharply to 15psi and then taper normally to red line. It happens the most if you floor it in the 3500-3900rpm range. It happens the most in 3rd gear and higher.

The most common thing that happens is the boost spikes to 17psi, holds at 15psi and then tapers to redline. When its holding at 15psi the boost is not always steady and sometimes goes back and forth 1 or 2 psi at around 15psi.

Other times the the boost does not spike but goes straight to 15psi holds and then tapers to redline.

Even though the boost acts the way it does it still drives well and is quick. You can feel the drop in boost but it is not hard.
