Default Need help!!!! !pleasee....brake experts

im working on my sister in laws passat (99,1.8t tip tronic) I'm trying to compress the rear brake caliper. I have the correct tool. I have it moved in maybe 1/4 of the way and it just won't budge now. It's so fuc$ing tight. What's going on ? The car is in neutral and the parking brake is off. I can't put in any more force, but i need the caliper to go farther.. how ????thnx

Default The caliper could be siezed

It has happened to me ONCE before (on a Passat as well)....try a little harder and if it still won't budge, it might be time for a new caliper.

Default It shouldn't

I get people coming into the job all the time with metal on metal rear brake pads, sometimes its hard to start the turning but it usually goes. The pads get warrantied and then the customer complains about having to pay for new brake rotors because they ground em up.

Try cranking a little harder...if you need to remove the rotor and bolt the caliper back in place so it doesn't move, do it. Chances are it will move if you have enough leverage and something holding the caliper.

Default Crack the bleeder valve on that caliper open.

Of course, if you do that, you'll want to bleed that corner when you're done.

Sometimes a C clamp (5-6") gives you a little more leverage than the brake tools. I've used that when I've had a stubborn piston. For some reason it has something to do with hyper extending that piston (wearing the pads down to the metal). Not sure why this happens.

Default BTW, last time this happened to me...I tried cracking the bleeder valve...

it didn't help. All it did was allow the brake fluid to drain out while I was making a trip to HD for a C clamp. :-P Ooops.
