We found a source for the display, ribbon complete.
He anticipates the repair will be less than $200.
The parts should be shipped (in theory) by next month.
I'm his guinea pig and he tried a couple other techniques on mine that had a varied degree of success. the issue is the cable not the panel, but to re-engineer that it is very labor intensive.
I will keep everyone posted!

I have a remanufactured cluster dated 11-2004 from a 2001 with a digital clock that I'd consider trading for the right cluster.
My wife keeps giving me static over not being able to see what's faulty on the beeping self-check.

Is it a loss of oil pressure?
Is it just low wiper fluid?
Who knows!
You'll LOVE this new game from Audi: Fault Check In A Hat! There's beeps! There's thrills! You have no idea what is going on!

First thing I did was pull the oil dipstick to check on the week old oil change.
2nd was shake the car to check the coolant level.
3rd thing I did was top off the washer fluid as I lost some when I disco'd the tube for the recent timing belt job.
thank goodness the wife is willing to critically analyze the faults and help with theories until the display is fixed...or until winter temps hit again and we can find out what the hell all the racket is about.
