Default Need some info/help, trying to buy and A4...

I'm new here and I've been reading as much as I can gather about A4 here and also VWVortex.com. So far I have many questions answered already, what reamains is my trouble in choosing and engine. So here I go...

I am planning a used A4 Quattro (1999.5 thru 2001) and if I pick the 1.8T then I would pick the 2001 model, mainly because the 20 HP increase. But is it really that much diff.? I was thinking that I can chip the car but since the power is diff. in the '01 1.8T will the chip be compatible or can I see as much of an increase vs. the previous 1.8T A4's with 150hp?

Past that I was also considering the 2.8 engine. It's got good hp and just a tad over 50 ft/lb of torque compared to the 1.8T. In my experience torque is normally more important that HP when looking for that extra pull. What are the opinions on that 'round here?

Finally, I got the "mod bug" in my previous car but found out that it's not really my thing after all. I just want something with good speed and not to be worried merging in and out of fast traffic. I would not mind chipping the car but not much past that.

Any advice is appreciated.

Regards,

Héctor.

if you chip the car, all models will be at about the same hp,+7 for 2001s

get a pre-2001 (cheaper) 1.8t and then chip it, don't bother w/the 2.8

Default So your saying that >>>

by chipping the 1.8T you will end up with roughly the same amount of power HP and Torque wise as what the 2.8 has stock? If that's true then for me (not planning to mod the car, engine wise) I would be better off with a 2.8 then, no?

Thx,

Héctor.

Default 2001's have updated motors.

Plus of course the beautiful celebration sport 17's...

Drive by wire, lower compression, Variable Cam timing of some sort, K03-Sport in 2001. Chipped the 2001 is pretty peppy.

Default no.....

...he is saying that a chipped 1998 and a chipped 2001 have roughly the same HP. Any MY 1.8T you chip will have between 200-210 HP.

Default I went with the 2.8 so I wouldnt have to bother with (read: void my warranty) the 1.8T...

...different strokes for different folks.

The whole 1.8T vs. 2.8 vs. S4 thing comes down to personal preferences and priorities - there is no universal answer.

My suggestion to Delta72 is to make a Pro and Con list to help net out the differences. Price, features, stock hp, mod potential, gas mileage, etc.
