I'm in the middle of a VC gasket and CAM tensioner gasket change on a 1.8t. I've got the CAM tensioner tool installed and the flat gasket removed and half circle rubber piece under the tensioner. However, how do I get under the tensioner to clean the edges? Do I take the whole tensioner off some how or leave it in there and work with the inch of room I have to play with?
Also, from what I understand, I do not put gasket sealant on the gasket for the CAM temsioner? Why not? Please help if you can. I don't want to mess something up. Here are some pics where I'm stuck. Also, is it normal for the cam tensioner to be springing up after removing bolts even with the tensioner tool? Just kinda stuck.

Yuck! This is the first time the VC has been removed since burning out an oil pump 3 years ago. Sludge issue.

Not a cheap way of cleaning it out but that is how Audi wants it done as per the sludge. I think BG charges us $60/gal for the detergent.

http://www.bgprod.com/blendr/stickyProblem.html</a

this time. I'm just cleaning the gasket area and replacing the gaskets. I know I should just clean it all while I'm in there but I can get enough time with the car to really clean it out. I'll be doing an auto-RX treatment or two again. though.
Well I've got the tensioner out now and I've run into a little bump. Need to go to the dealership to get a torn three way valve (the one that attaches to the back of the valve cover). Other than that I'm ready to reassemble.
